2008 saw the presentation of the inaugural Martin Laird Award at Australian University Games. This award recognises an up and coming player who has performed not only on the field but also with the management of a university club/team. To qualify this player can not have played a nationals tournament.

Every Australian University Games a group of selectors pick the best 16 men and women to be part of the green and gold team. This team is a mock Australian University Team that (if there was such a tournament) would represent Australia at a World Ultimate University Championship.
